"Carlow Beginnings"
Carlow is one of the county's northern townships. Although the township's
early settlers were for the most part Scots', Carlow was named after a
town in Ireland. The township was surveyed in 1865 - 1866. It was lumbering
that attracted these early settlers to the area. In 1869, the post office
was opened in Boulter. The school was to be built on land that was donated
to the township by Mr. Joseph Stringer in 1873. In the northern part of
the township was the "Burgess Mine", where corundum deposits
were found in 1906. The mines was operative for eleven years.
