In October of 1897, R. Bradshaw
had discovered free surface gold, which was assayed at $ 9.60 to the ton.
The gold had been found in a gully in clay and sand soil. It was the first
discovery of gold in this part of Ontario.
Mr. George Mc. Lean had made a discovery of ore containing gold and silver.
Samples of this ore had been assayed at $40.00 a ton.
In the long run the only real winner in Bancroft's gold sweepstakes seems
to have been Mrs. J. Cloak's chicken and she only paid off in July of
1902 when she lost her head on the chopping block. In the hen's crop Mrs.
Cloak discovered a gold nugget, "about half the size of a small bean"
which the bird had picked somewhere on the family's property in the Bancroft
Village.
